Metal studs are huge in fashion and are a trend that you see all across the runway from shoes to bags to jewelry, jackets, belts and more.  This is a trend that is gaining popularity across all demographics and has not only played a significant role in fashion trends but metal studs have also made a big impact on decorating trends as well. Metal Studs otherwise  known as Upholstery Tacks come in so many varieties: round, flat, hammered, vintage or even spiked and are a perfect way to adorn both your fashion and decorating accessories. For centuries, upholstery tacks have been applied to furniture to pin fabric over cushions.  Those same tacks are now added to accentuate sofas and headboards with the popular nail-head look.

I’ve included 10 Creative ways that you can incorporate stylish metal upholstery tacks into your home decor.

1. Borders: Decorate a frame, mirror or any edge by adding metal tacks.  Geometric shapes look much more dynamic when the borders are embellished.

2. Wallpaper:  Accenting a wall with tacks is a large-scale project that absolutely requires a ruler, level, and/or tape.  It’s great for a more industrial look, or quilted appearance.

5. Jewelry Racks:  Every woman needs a place to store her jewelry where it won’t tangle.  Try adorning a piece of crown or base molding with tacks.  This is a great way to display all of you pieces in one place to ensure that you wear it all.

 6. Candles:  Decorative candles can get very expensive.  Try picking up some cheaper, plain candles.  A little addition of patterned fabric and or vintage tacks can upgrade the candles and tie them into your motif.

7. Studded Flare: Simple wood pieces can look much higher quality with the addition of a few metal studs.  Without going overboard, a simple rim around a coffee table or a few tacks on the feet or legs of a chair can give a plain piece a tasteful sassiness.

8. Decorated Tacks: Although upholstery tacks come in a wide variety, they can be personalized with unique heads.  If you want to soften the metal look, try covering the head of the tack with glue and adding your favorite accessory.  These decorated tacks look darling on corkboards or applied to any of the other projects listed.

9. Sparkle: Some very inexpensive tacks are the standard silver or gold flat-headed style.  It’s easy to start with an unattractive piece, cover it entirely with overlapping cheap tacks and end up with a bright and shiny accessory.  These sparkly items make great accents for a mantle, table centerpiece or ornament.

10. Most Creative Use:  The most creative use of upholstery tacks that I have seen are shown below.  The first example is an artistic globe.  The tacks subtly depict the continents for a rustic and classy finished piece.  The next uses upholstery tacks as fasteners for wire.  The wire acts as storage for wrapping paper.  These are both extremely innovative uses for upholstery tacks.

Tacks can be located at fabric stores, craft stores, hardware stores and sometimes at stationery or office supply stores.  I highly recommend using the upholstery tacks that come in strips for easier application.  It can be challenging to space the tacks evenly apart so be sure to measure the spacing and follow a straight line when applying free-hand.  Use a hammer to avoid tiring your fingers out when pressing the tacks.  Using upholstery tacks for projects around the home is affordable and it can provide that creative accent you may be missing.
