DIY Burlap Christmas Trees

I was at West Elm a few weeks ago and came across these Fabulous Burlap Christmas trees. I absolutely loved them; however instead of buying them I decided to make my own Burlap Christmas Trees. I previously decided to change up my Christmas theme from Winter Wonderland (lots of crystals, feathers and bling) to a Vintage/Rustic theme with lots of burlap, twine and linen, so these West Elm Inspired DIY Burlap Christmas Trees were the perfect Christmas Craft for me to take on. DIY Burlap Christmas Trees are fun to make and they look awesome, at least I think they do! 🙂 I decided to use the roll of Burlap I purchased from Michaels, as it has a coating on the back that keeps it from unraveling making it the perfect Burlap for my DIY Burlap Christmas Trees.  As a side note,  this is by far the best burlap for crafts,  it doesn’t unravel so you get a crisp clean look without the extra work of hemming the sides or applying fray check.  I highly recommend it!

Okay back to the task at hand.  This project takes about an hour (maybe a little longer or shorter depending on the size of tree you are making). For the small tree it takes about 60-70 pieces of ribbon. Before I get started I wanted to share a picture of the Burlap Christmas Trees from West Elm.

Here is what you will need

• Styrofoam Cone
• Burlap
• Scissors
• Hot glue gun

Step 1: Cut a strip of burlap to go all the way around the bottom of your cone. It should be about 3/4″ wide. Then glue it on with your hot glue gun. This is so you don’t see the cone through the ribbon

Step 2: Cut strips of burlap so that they are about 1″ wide and 4″ long

Step 3: Fold fabric so that it crosses over each other (it looks like the breast cancer Ribbon). Add a dot of hot glue to keep it together

Step 4: Turn it upside down and backwards and glue it on the cone

Continue gluing the pieces around the cone. Once you’ve finished the bottom row move to the next row. Start by gluing the first piece of the second row inbetween two pieces on the bottom row

Keep gluing the ribbon around the cone

Step 5: When you get to the row right before the top. Cut a few little square pieces and glue them on top of the cone.

Step 6: Then glue the last row on the last row of ribbon

Step 7: Now cut a small piece of fabric about 1.5″ long and .75″ wide and glue it so that it becomes a loop (This will be the top of the tree)

Step 8: Glue the top piece onto the very top of the cone

Now you have a West Elm Inspired Burlap Christmas tree.
