I have been doing a ton of both big and small DIY projects for the nursery, as it’s not only a great way to cut costs but it’s also a great way to give your little one a room that is made up of your personal touches. The way I see it, when it comes to customizing your home sentimental value is worth way more than the dollar bill, as its value will only appreciate with time. Well, maybe not literally, but I will take a personalized gift over a store bought one any day of the week :-)

So, if you are looking for inexpensive ways to add style to your little ones nursery or big kid room this DIY Decor Project is perfect for you to try because it’s not only stylish but it’s also practical. Did you know this little Wooden ABC Box (which can also be purchased in two larger sizes) has a removable lid? So all  you have to do is take the lid off and viola, storage space!!!

I purchased my Wooden ABC Box at Hobby Lobby. It retails at $3.99 but I went when they were running a 50% off sale on all their wooden crafts so I paid right at $2.00 for the box. Remember to check the hobby lobby ad before you go and If they aren’t running a sale on their wood crafts you can use a 40% off coupon.  I know 40% may not be alot off of $3.99 but hey, every dime counts!!

This project took about an hour to complete from start to finish and while it may not be perfect I thought it complimented Riley’s nursery nicely!!

Okay, lets get started!

Here is what you will need:

  • ABC Wooden Box
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint (I had a ton of craft paint at home and ended up mixing the colors until I came up with the perfect pink and blue (silver mist) to match the rooms decor scheme
  • Paint Brush (I used a very small fine tip and a medium size square paint brush

Step 1: Start by inspecting the box for any areas that are rough. When you find a place that has a rough edge that isn’t smooth you need to sand it down.

"Rough Edges"

Gently sand the  rough areas to make them as smooth as possible. Make sure to wipe the box down with a damp cloth when you are done sanding.

Step 2: Since I’m alternating with two color schemes (Silver Mist/White and Pink/White) I decided to start with one of the color schemes and paint all of the sides that I want to have that color scheme prior to moving to the next color scheme.  I started with the silver mist/white color scheme, so I painted all the letters that I wanted in that color scheme first.

Paint Letters

Step 3: Paint the area around the letter white. I did this for all of the Silver Mist/White sides (I thought it was easier if I did everything in that one color scheme before moving to the next color scheme even though white is part of the other color scheme). As a side note, it’s okay if you go outside the lines because you can go back and touch up those areas when you are finished.

Step 4: Paint the outside edges for the silver mist/white color scheme silver mist

"Paint outside Edges"

Step 5: Follow the steps above to paint the remaining sides in the 2nd color scheme, in my case Pink and White.

And…..Voila an EASY DIY Nursery Decor Project that is stylish and functional! So….what do you think??
